From Affenwerner to Wilhelma

The Wilhelma, Stuttgart's popular zoo, is also known beyond the borders of Baden-Württemberg. However, it is almost forgotten that there have been several very successful zoos in Stuttgart since the early 19th century, whose history is presented for the first time in a coherent manner in this book: These include the animal show of "Affenwerner," a revolutionary innkeeper who expanded his parents' restaurant in Sophienstraße into a zoo with lions and bears. Or Nill's Tierpark on Herdweg, where exotic animals as well as people from distant countries were presented.
