Raphael – Revolutionising Tapestry Design

In 1515, Pope Leo X commissioned the Italian painter Raffaello Sanzio (1483-1520), today commonly known as Raphael, to create drawings for a series of ten tapestries depicting scenes from the lives of Saints Peter and Paul. This commission played a crucial role in the stylistic development of Flemish tapestries, testifying to the princely splendor of the sixteenth century. Under Habsburg rule, Brussels developed into a center for the production of exquisite tapestries. Raphael's designs are among the most successful compositions in the history of tapestry production.
