The Cattle Whisperer

He was one of the first to put his cattle back outside. He was one of the first to feed them only natural food – and he was one of the first to achieve what previously seemed impossible: a gentle death directly on the pasture. Ernst Hermann Maier uncompromisingly bases his methods on the natural social behavior of cattle. His herd numbers 200 head, with friendships among the bulls and calves staying with their mothers.

At the beginning of his long struggle for more dignity and respect in livestock farming, Ernst Hermann Maier’s revolutionary methods met with resistance in the village community and from administrative authorities. Today, he is a role model, and consumers also agree with him: organic meat is booming for both taste and ethical reasons. It is both exciting and encouraging to read how entrenched paths are broken and successfully abandoned.

Ernst Hermann Maier, chairman of Uria e.V. (Association for the Promotion of a New Type of Animal Husbandry), vehemently advocates for the abolition of livestock transport for slaughter. As a farmer, he lives from his animals and at the same time demonstrates how their use can be achieved with respect and affection. For some time now, the herd has been scientifically monitored, and Maier gives lectures at universities about his experiences with species-appropriate husbandry.
