Joy of Brazil

Shortly after World War II, the painter Fritz Steisslinger left war-torn Germany for Brazil. It was a journey to the country where his wife was born and where her family lived. He visited Brazil multiple times. The country became a retreat and an artistic revelation for him. In 1948, Steisslinger acquired a house and garden there, letting himself be carried away by the exotic impressions, the lush vegetation, and the foreign people. Inspired by the country's diversity and its tropical vibrancy, Steisslinger painted pictures that are unique in contemporary art for their painterly freedom and exuberant abundance.
