Why is E = mc²?

E = mc² is the most famous formula in the world. With it, Einstein hit the nail on the head: energy and mass are two sides of the same coin, and the speed of light c is their exchange rate. But why does this seemingly simple relationship exist? How did Albert Einstein come to this conclusion? And what are the consequences for understanding the universe? Brian Cox, professor of physics and well-known in England for his BBC broadcasts, has teamed up with his colleague Jeff Forshaw, professor of theoretical physics, to explain Einstein's seemingly simple equation in detail and comprehensibly, with great energy.
