Why is E = mc²?

E = mc² is the most famous formula in the world. With it, Einstein put it in a nutshell: energy and mass are two sides of the same coin, and the speed of light c is their exchange rate. But why does this simple relationship exist? How did Albert Einstein come to this conclusion? And what are the consequences for understanding the universe? Brian Cox, Professor of Physics and well-known in England for his BBC broadcasts, together with his colleague Jeff Forshaw, Professor of Theoretical Physics, took on Einstein's seemingly simple equation to explain it in detail and understandably with a lot of energy.
