Undesirable hunting behaviour will not decrease on its own. Initially, we manage it with a long lead and simultaneously train desirable behaviour: waiting in all its facets and interruptions are on the training plan. This should ensure that the undesirable "puzzle pieces" are less likely to find their way into the "wild" hustle and bustle when off-leash, and should the four-legged friend occasionally lose its footing, a well-trained recall or stop signal should interrupt it. We will take a closer look at possible stop signals – coming back is not always the right choice if there are obstacles to overcome on the way back to the handler, such as cycle or bridle paths; then and again it might even be easier for the canine brain to stop and peek after the fleeting reflection of a deer and not completely disengage from the "wild" hustle and bustle.
Anja Fiedler explains,
• how you can encourage stopping in "wild" surroundings,
• what the harness grip and its announcement are all about,
• which options exist for stopping at a distance,
• why a good generalization story is so important for stop signals,
• how your stop signals are gradually interwoven with "wild" contexts, and
• how a good reward story boosts stopping.
