More thrilling than a fleeting deer? More enticing than the scent of a hare? More captivating than a strutting pheasant? Is this the stuff reward dreams are made of? No, that's the good news.
Yes, we need to get to the bottom of canine needs to turn rewards into reinforcers of desired behavior. That's the tricky news. From exploratory behavior to favorite gaits, to the puzzle pieces of the predatory sequence – we carefully observe which behaviors motivate "wild" neighbors and put together a reward potpourri that withstands every need and motivational situation.
Wildlife-friendly puzzle pieces, gripping counterparts to the puzzle pieces, exciting search tasks for all senses and talents... this is how we leave a lasting reward story in the dog's brain that increases desired behavior. We have noted needs appropriately, we keep an eye on the arousal and activity level of the rewards, and we reduce motivational conflicts in the dog's brain when it comes to decisions between the dog and human world.
Anja Fiedler explains:
• how the caregiver identifies canine needs and creates rewards from them,
• what role SEEKING plays in biology and selection,
• how motivation, rewards, and decisions are related,
• how marker signals provide information about the type, location, and activity of rewards,
• what curvy rewards are all about and where they are placed, and
• why rewards always remain in flux: from the reward highlight from the human world to verbal praise in the dog world.
