A robot that plays "Rock, Paper, Scissors," can perform calculations, acts as a compass or digital die, measures temperature, and can be remotely controlled via an app – that's Proxi.
Its powerful single-board computer brain – the original BBC micro:bit – and intuitive graphical programming language make it possible for children aged 10 to 16 to learn programming through play.
Numerous coding projects await, explained with examples in the clearly illustrated instructions. For programming beginners, ready-made codes are also available for download.
Equipped with 5 sensors, an LED display, Bluetooth, and a sound module, it never gets boring!
The KOSMOS Proxi experimentation kit was nominated for the Toy Award 2020.
Assembling Proxi is part of the experiment kit, and of course, the instructions show step-by-step what to do and provide tips on what to pay attention to during assembly. This promotes fine motor skills and provides a great insight into the robot's inner workings. In this way, children can easily understand how Proxi works.
Once Proxi is assembled, the micro:bit board comes into play. KOSMOS offers ready-made codes for programming beginners to download so they can start playing with Proxi right away. Children only need to connect the micro:bit to a computer with the included USB cable and drag and drop the downloaded code onto the board.
Then, the micro:bit is simply plugged into Proxi's head, and the fun can begin: It sings and dances, becomes a bowling ball, or displays small notes on its screen.
Of course, children can also program the micro:bit board themselves. The instructions explain how to do this in a child-friendly way and using a clear example.
The micro:bit board is programmed using a graphical, block-based programming language (MakeCode).
Children can modify existing codes or write their own programs. And of course, the entire knowledge and all projects of the huge micro:bit community are open to them.
Users can access the programming editor and community projects via the microbit.org website, which is operated by the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization whose goal is to enable children to access IT education.
Proxi is a micro:bit accessory kit recognized by the Microbit Foundation.
The micro:bit board includes the following features:
- Programmable microcontroller, incl. its own memory
- Bluetooth
- Accelerometer
- Compass
- 2 programmable buttons
- 5x5 LED display
- LEDs can be used as a light sensor
- Processor can be used as a temperature sensor
- Pins for output and input of signals
Proxi also comes with an additional board that provides a connector for the micro:bit board. This board allows the micro:bit to control the robot's functions. In addition, it includes the following features:
- Infrared sensors
- Buzzer for sound output
- Connection to the battery compartment to power the micro:bit
