Nose work in the wild often comes easily to our four-legged companions, as the olfactory finds are innate triggers: For foragers, they are smells of edibles; for hunters, they are smells of prey. These smells inherently have an attractive meaning, and attraction is a self-starter, as it fuels the motivation to search for and pursue edible and huntable smells. Nose work as an outdoor activity can enrich a dog's everyday life if it addresses the inclinations and preferred search and movement patterns of the four-legged friend as key elements.
Anja Fiedler explains,
• where we left off in Part I,
• why and how we should focus on indication behavior to build and maintain the motivation for searching and pursuing target scents,
• which aspects of nose work we can incorporate indoors, away from "wild" surroundings,
• how varied the searching and pursuing can be arranged,
• how fetching as an indication behavior continues,
• the work whistle in action.
