A flushing pheasant, fresh rabbit tracks, or the sight of a deer can make hunting-motivated dogs go crazy in a matter of seconds. Either they are off and away, or they tug on the leash and become unresponsive. Wouldn't it be nice if the dog offered good behavior on its own, reliably indicated game, and could be controlled in every situation?
Here, the exercises of stopping and recalling are elemental, because when reliably recalled, they offer the dog many freedoms, even in game-rich areas! However, they demand the highest self-control from the dog. Therefore, the training must be very well structured, regularly refreshed, and, above all, rewarded with high value.
Anja Fiedler explains:
• which factors cause unwanted hunting behavior
• why a good learning atmosphere is so important
• how to support or favor recalling and stopping
• that different methods and signals lead to a reliable break
• how communication, motivation, and attention influence our training.
