Neozoa such as raccoons and nutrias have been on the rise in German hunting grounds for several years. The annual hunting bag for raccoons alone more than doubled from the 2013/14 hunting year to 2022/23. A large proportion of this bag is taken using traps. Box or tunnel traps, for example, can be set 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – something a hunter with a weapon in a raised hide or on a stalk cannot come close to matching. However, for trap hunting of neozoa to be reliably successful, certain things should be considered. Trap hunting expert Andre Westerkamp will address all aspects of trap hunting with raccoons or nutrias as target species in this webinar. The expert will share all his tips and tricks on choosing a location, selecting traps, baiting, and dispatching caught animals. With the trapping knowledge from this webinar, your trap should also snap regularly.
Learn in this webinar:
• How to recognize that invasive species are present in your hunting ground.
• How to identify effective trap locations in your hunting ground.
• Which traps you should use for which target species.
• What the traps should be baited with to catch regularly.
• How to humanely remove caught animals from the trap.
Our Expert:
Andre Westerkamp has been a passionate animal observer since childhood and gained early experience raising orphaned young animals. After an internship at the Helgoland Bird Observatory, he turned his passion for wildlife into a profession, completing his training as a state-certified taxidermist in 1980. His enthusiasm for trap hunting led Andre Westerkamp to work early on the development of new, effective, and animal welfare-friendly traps up to production readiness. In 1992, he registered the patent for the WeKa trap (Westerkamp box trap). Andre Westerkamp has been sharing his practical knowledge for years in his own trap hunting school, as a junior hunter instructor, and at trap hunting seminars.
