The Mystery of Gravitational Waves

Gravitational waves make the entire universe tremble, yet their detection is complicated. It was 100 years after Albert Einstein's brilliant prediction that a detector received the long-awaited signal in September 2015. This confirmed that extreme events in space do indeed shake spacetime, just as Einstein calculated. The news made headlines worldwide.

This achievement is a technical and scientific milestone. German researchers played a significant role in developing the measuring instruments for the detectors in the USA. Since then, five more gravitational wave signals have been received. Among them was another sensation: for the first time, the source of the waves could also be observed in visible light. And the new era of astronomy has only just begun!
