The strutting pheasant, the fragrant hare track, the fleeting deer – how did that go again? We cannot and do not have to outdo the temptations that field, forest, and meadow offer to canine senses, but we must address prevailing needs, then it will work with the "wild" neighbors.
Behaviors from the categories of waiting and interrupting, such as standing and watching "wild" extras, stopping on fragrant scent trails, or coming when fox and rabbit say good night, are probably the essence of desired behaviors – from a human perspective! From a dog's perspective, the plan would probably look different.
Therefore, it is important not only to build but also to maintain that very motivation in order to reconcile canine and human needs. So, let's take all those essential behaviors and provide them with a motivating reward history, because what is worthwhile is also learned!
Generalizing with "wild" participation is important, solidifying away from "wild" participation is more important, but what does that look like in practice? SEEKING behaviors compete with behaviors related to waiting and interrupting – in this case, competition does not stimulate the training business. With the dog's well-being in mind and a training backpack full of rewards for all senses and needs, we head into the "wild" mission.
Anja Fiedler explains:
• how to proceed after establishing essential behaviors and behaviors related to rewards in "wild" use,
• why the training medal also has two sides: solidification and generalization,
• what influence the constant change of canine needs has on rewards and their value,
• how rewards become reinforcers that motivate, increase, and make behaviors robust against "wild" temptations,
• why the continuous care and maintenance of behavior does not mean an eternal fireworks display of good mood, and
• how well-being, rewards, and motivation are related to sustainable training success.
