Retrieving... One might think it's a given, but the existence of the "holding" puzzle piece within the prey drive sequence means that even specialized dog breeds don't inherently possess a perfect retrieve in their genetic makeup. Some dogs do enjoy carrying things, some even carry them to their owner, while others prefer to carry things away from them. We also encounter nuances like gripping and tearing, or shaking.
As diverse as canine skills may be, we can work with them – when it comes to hobbies, we allow for individual preferences; when it comes to jobs, we develop a reliable retrieve that must meet certain criteria. We want to shed light on both making holding a joyful hobby and a precise job.
Anja Fiedler explains,
- what the "holding" puzzle piece is all about,
- how individually varied canine talents around carrying can be,
- why it doesn't matter how talented the carrier is, because hobbies are for every dog,
- how we can get the most fun and variety from the hobby idea,
- which training ingredients make retrieving a reliable job,
- why reliability does not exclude fun, and
- what facets retrieving can have.
